Who did this?
This website was a cooperative effort by persons who are interested
in seeing that economic development is stimulated through service to
the forest/wood industry in the form of educational development,
kindergarten through postsecondary. It has been financially
supported by state and federal agencies that have come to see that
same vision.
Who wrote the materials?
Vocational education, technology education and agricultural
education teachers throughout Pennsylvania and faculty of the
Pennsylvania College of Technology wrote the teacher planning
guides. A list of those individuals can be found at
http://www.teachaboutwood.org/writers.asp

Do I have to pay?
All materials on this website are free. You do need to register and
provide the information for the required fields to be able to
download or view the teacher planning guides and other downloadable
materials.
Why must I register to get the free materials?
Federal and state grants were used to create the materials available
on this website. The information you provide to us on the
registration form allows us to provide information to the funding
agency about who is using the materials. We will not provide any
information about a single individual to our funding sources, only
complied data that describes usage patterns.
Is this for hardwoods or softwoods or both?
The curriculum has been developed to serve the hardwood industry and
therefore the content is directly related to competencies needed by
businesses in it. However, since it is in a modular format, schools
serving the softwood industries will be able to utilize parts of it.
Where do I send feedback?
Feedback on the content of the site should be sent to
CareerEd@pct.edu
Who owns the site?
The site is owned by the Northwest Industrial Resource Center, Erie
PA. The site is hosted by Pennsylvania College of Technology,
Williamsport PA..
How old is the content? Is it updated regularly?
The teacher planning guides were developed in a period from August
2000 to August 2002. They were developed sequentially starting with
Year 1, Core Curriculum. No specific time schedule has been
developed for updating, however, it is anticipated that users will
continually contribute to teaching activities and resources using
the simple upload forms found at the "File Upload Form" link in the
registered user area of the site.
How can I get my stuff on the website?
Use the simple upload forms found at the "File Upload Form" link in
the registered user area of the site. Three types of forms are
available to upload resource information, lesson plans or exemplary
practices, and related projects.
How do I convince my school to implement this program?
School administrators and boards usually listen to two audiences -
local forest and wood industry representatives and students and
their parents. I would use both of these audiences to present your
case.
Do I have to implement the whole program?
The teacher planning guides are designed to be used as stand alone
curriculum content or can be used as a whole program. It is
important that you as a teacher make the curriculum fit your local
community needs, your district's needs, and the needs of your
students.
What is the labor market data?
Since labor market data sources vary from state to state, your
career center website developed out of the Workforce Investment Act
should have data available on the Internet. A national map with
links to each state's one stop centers can be found at
http://www.doleta.gov/usworkforce/onestop/onestopmap.cfm
From the federal level, http://www.bls.gov is the most up-to-date and accurate national
data on employment both by occupation and by industry.
What industry is involved? Who is the advisory board?
The project fist began with input form a small group of forest and
wood industry representatives from northwestern Pennsylvania. Many
of these persons continue to attend informational meetings about the
project. We have also used survey input from representatives of 73
additional forest and wood businesses within Pennsylvania employing
3,412 individuals. The informal advisory board consists of
supportive representatives from industry, all levels of education,
and government.
What kinds of teachers are certified to teach this program?
Check with your state department of education officials to determine
who is certified to teach this program in your state.
How did you select the competencies?
The first year competencies were selected from a two-prong approach.
Step 1 included a DACUM process with industry leaders from northwest
Pennsylvania identifying duties and tasks of an expert worker in the
industry. The outcome of the DACUM was then used to produce a
questionnaire sent to industry across Pennsylvania that represented
the five specialty areas: Forest Management, Timber Harvesting,
Primary Manufacturing, Secondary Manufacturing, and Construction
Carpentry. Results of that survey were used to establish the first
year competencies. Year two and three competencies were then derived
from that information. A copy of the needs assessment can be found
in the appendices of the Year one curriculum.
What are these performance standards and why did you use them
rather than state standards?
This program can be utilized nationally, anywhere the hardwood
forest/wood industries are found. We therefore used a nationally
developed set of academic performance standards known as the "New
Standards" developed, owned, and distributed by the National Center
on Education and the Economy (NCEE). More information on these
nationally accepted standards can be found at
www.ncee.org.
How do I set up my printer to
correctly print a web page from teachaboutwood.org?
Pages on this site are designed to be printed with page margins
set to 1/2". You may change your margin settings by selecting
Page Setup from the File menu of your browser. Once you have
changed your margins, select Print Preview from the File menu to
preview the page prior to printing.
Some printers and browsers also allow
you to scale the page to print without altering your default
margins. If available, you may check the "Scale to Print"
option in the "Setup" tab of your Printer Properties.
By default, most browser do not print
background colors or images. Internet Explorer users may
override this selection by checking the "Print background colors and
images" option in the Advanced tab of Internet Options available in
the Tools menu. In Netscape Navigator, check the "Print
Background (color & images)" option in Page Setup.
Can I receive a hard copy of all these materials without
downloading the files?
Hardcopies of the curriculum are available in 4 notebooks. If you
are from Pennsylvania, notebooks can be distributed to you at no
cost until the supply is exhausted.
If you are from outside of Pennsylvania, the cost for each notebook
is $35, which covers the actual cost of production and shipping.
